Fitness Bingo at LBS

Hi Families,

All of the classes at Lake Bonavista School are participating in a fitness bingo challenge from February 23-April 8! We wanted to share the bingo card with you so you can continue the fun at home!

At school, each time a class completes a ‘blackout’ bingo card, they will be added to a draw and entered to win bonus recess time! If your family complete all of the exercises on a bingo card at your house, please notify your classroom teacher and your child’s class will receive an additional entry in the draw.

Each exercise on the bingo card is to be completed in an interval style - 20 seconds of the exercise, followed by 10 seconds of rest. In order to cross the activity off of your bingo card you must complete a minimum of 4 interval sets. If some of the exercises are unfamiliar, please ask your child to teach you the movement.

Feel free to check out the video below for a further explanation of the bingo challenge.

Hi Families!

Math

A new dice game was learned in Math, the 'Sandwich Game' introducing them to the idea of 'between'. Children worked in partners to each roll a die, communicate with each other and identify whose die had more or less and then order the dice smallest number first and largest number second. Next, one partner rolled a third die. Together the partners read the number and decided where the number would go in relation to the dice they had already rolled: before, after or in-between. If the die went in-between, the partners got to say 'Sandwich! Chomp!' and pretend to chomp. Ask your child to play this game with you at home!

Green die - partner 1
Yellow die - partner 2
Red die - 3rd dice

Phys. Ed.

This week we took out our parachute and learned how to be safe and responsible with it while having fun! We played Ring around the Rosie, Popcorn and learned how to make a tent by lifting the parachute.

Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation Presentation

This week the children has the opportunity to learn from The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation. We attended an online session titled 'Who's in Your Backyard?' We were Wildlife Detectives learning about what clues can help us identify animals using our 5 Senses.  Did you know that owls have the softest feathers or bird poop feels like toothpaste? We listened to recordings of different animals including a Saw-whet Owl, a porcupine and a frog. What can you hear in your backyard? Ask your child what their favourite part of the presentation was. Stayed tuned for Student Led conference information to see how we use our new learning!

Save the Date!

Dear Families,

Mark your calendars! The fun and excitement of a Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! To adapt to our changing needs, Scholastic has developed a Hybrid Book Fair (in-school with a virtual link) to provide an opportunity for our students and families to experience the joy of reading together.

So, save the date! Our Scholastic Hybrid Book Fair will take place on:

Friday, March 4th – Friday, March 11th

When it’s time to shop, you can choose to visit the virtual link and purchase online or send in cash for your child to purchase books in person. We will be sending home a letter with more information soon!

Happy Reading!

Hi Families,

We started our week celebrating Valentine's Day, and adding our last step to our 'Kindergarten Has Heart' collaborative art project.

After viewing the Scratch Garden Texture song, each student contributed
a texture they heard, or generated an original example.

AM Kindergarten Thomas
Ask your child what object they added,
and what texture it has.

In Phys. Ed., we spent the week doing "Would You Rather" activities. Students have to listen carefully to the two choices provided, choose one, and then do the action paired with that choice. All 3 "Would you Rather" activities from the week are posted in Google Classroom for you to enjoy as a family. Google Classroom --> Classwork --> Resources --> Would You Rather Fitness Activities.

An example from our Valentine's Day "Would You Rather...?"
Find the full activity, as well as others, in Google Classroom.

We continued to explore ways to self-assess and understand our next steps in learning, through patterns in Math.

Matching pattern examples to pattern cores.
Students labeled each item in the pattern to confirm their understanding.

Together we sorted each pattern core as "mild", "medium" or "spicy"
so students can choose their "just-right" learning level,
and have an understanding of what their next steps are,
 and how to challenge themselves.

Between Valentine's Day and Pink Shirt Day, February is all about kindness, caring and friendship. One of the most important, and hardest, friendship skills is learning to apologize.

Flamingo is upset. Very upset.
Potato is sorry. Very sorry. In fact, he is the sorriest.
But he doesn’t know how to tell Flamingo.

Apologizing can be hard, it doesn’t have to be complicated.
We learned when, why, and how to say you’re sorry.

Some compiled ideas about apologizing.

With Teacher's Convention and the Family Day Holiday, we will see students on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND!

Have a wonderful long weekend everyone!

Masks at School

As recently announced by the Alberta Government, masks are no longer mandatory for students to wear in school as of today (Monday, February 14th, 2022).

We had a talk as a class about how different families will make different choices. We discussed the importance of showing respect for everyone's decision to wear or not wear a mask.

If you could please review this with your child and discuss your family expectations for your child regarding masks, it would be appreciated.

Thank you families.

Hi Families,

Celebration Day! Today students are bringing home their All About Me posters to share with you! You will notice that each poster has a Bullseye Rubric and Example/NonExample Rubric that students used to self-assess their self-portrait. Please celebrate their use of the rubrics, as they are a tool for knowing how to improve your work, and make goals, not about being right or wrong. Try asking your chid, "What would you do differently next time?"

Alongside the posters, your child's video presentation is now posted in Google Classroom. Again, these are for CELEBRATION - getting up in front of your peers to share takes a lot of bravery and we are so proud that every child presented and made a video.

Your child's video can be located in Google Classroom --> Classwork --> All About Me Videos --> Name

If you have not yet logged on to Google Classroom this year, your child's video will not yet be posted. Please log on, and we will check on Monday and add in any videos needed at that point.

Math

In Math, we have continued to work on various representations of number lines, embedding subitizing practice, number order, quantity and abstraction of quantity to size.

Creating a number line with Montessori Bead Bars, applying our subitizing Superpower!

Creating sets of dots for our own personal number lines.

Our inspiration book.

Students ordered their fish according to size,
some ordering from largest to smallest,
and others from smallest to largest.
They then labeled each fish with the corresponding number from 1-10.

The beginnings of another collaborative art project:
each fishes scales are the number we associate with that size of fish.
Lots of targeted number writing practice!

We also continued developing our reasoning ability through regular Which One Doesn't Belong?
Which One Doesn't Belong?
Can you apply vocabulary such as: dice, set, numeral, equal pairs or doubles?

Which One Doesn't Belong?
Can you apply the vocabulary: rows, equal, height (tall), length (long)?

Literacy

In whole class, small group and individual practice, we continue to develop our ability to stretch out and identify sounds in words. Students are using one of two kinaesthetic strategies: pulling their hands apart to model "stretching" or using a rollercoaster movement, which works best for CVC words.

We are strengthening our identification of vowel sounds, especially differentiating between short e and i, as they are very similar. Associating the action or cue word from our Animated Literacy program helps with proper sound production.

Actress Annie: make the addition sign with your arms, cue word is "adding"
Edgar Elf: lift your arms like your lifting weights, cue word is "exercise"
Ichabod Ichthyosaurus: scratch your tummy, cue word is "itchy"
Dr. Ollie Ostrich: open your mouth wide, cue word is "ostrich"
Uncle Upton: point upwards, cue word is "up" or "upside down"

We are also working on accurate use of capitals and lowercase in our own names. You can support this at home by providing opportunities to practice, as well as correcting for lowercase letters through their name.

Art

February is all about kindness, friendship and caring. We have been creating a collaborative set of art called, "Kindergarten Has Heart" where students are contributing 3 different mediums to one abstract collage.

We brainstormed different kinds of straight and curved lines.
Some lines we even gave nicknames to - can your child tell you the name of some lines?

Each child added a straight or curved line of their choice to their classes heart.
Ask your child if they can pick out the line they made.

We then thought about prints, and where we had seen or heard of prints or printing before.
Lots of great ideas! Can you think of others?

Each child added a print using loose parts.
Some prints were surprising depending on the loose part we chose.
Ask your child to pick out the print they made.

Finally, we celebrated Funky Feet Day on Thursday!
