Hi Families,

Lots of special days this week to celebrate and recognize!

Tuesday was International Peace Day! We read a beautiful book called "What Does Peace Feel Like?" which illustrates all the ideas of what peace looks, sounds, tastes, feels and smells like to children around the world.

What Does Peace Feel Like?

Kindergarten students then created their own "My Peaceful Place" pictures to represent how we can all feel peace differently. Ask your child about their peaceful place. What's yours?

Some ideas for continuing this work at home:
- have a family Sharing Circle talking about what peace is to you
- create pictures together showing peace
- design or build a peaceful spot in your home together
- try a Mindful practice technique to bring peace to your minds and bodies

Then, it was our Terry Fox Run on Wednesday. We listened to the story "Terry Fox and Me" to learn about Terry's life and the important role his friendship with Doug Alward played in the Marathon of Hope.

Terry Fox and Me

We went outside to the field to run across Canada, completing Terry's journey.

This week, we also introduced the last couple shelves of materials. Children now have an extensive repertoire of materials they can select from during the Montessori Work Period.

The Montessori Roman Arch

Homes from Across the World

Recreating Famous Structures

Self-correcting number puzzle,
matching numerals to quantity.

Hanging Senguin Board,
representing teen numbers

Montessori Hundred Board,
understanding numbers in a sequence

Spindle Boxes,
creating quantity to match numerals

Sensory exploration in rice

Finally, Wednesday was also the first day of Fall! Luckily, we are having amazing weather to get out and explore all the changes happening at this time of year!

September Conferences

Hello Families,

What an amazing school year start-up we have been having at LBS!

Typically, at this time of year, we host Parent Teacher Conferences in an Open House format.

With restrictions due to Covid-19, our format has been adjusted. This year, each class has created a video to introduce families to our school, answer commonly asked questions and show details of how our class works.

These videos will be released on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 4:00 pm.

If you have questions after viewing the video, please reach out. We are certainly missing seeing families in our school building and look forward to future opportunities where this may be possible.

Thank you!
All LBS Teachers

Hi Families,

September = Information Download!

We are trying our best to deliver information in timely, but manageable chunks. If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. We don't always have an answer, but can usually point you in the right direction!

At LBS, we use several channels for communicating with families. Within our classroom, we use:

Email --> usually when we have a message or information specific to you/your child
School Messenger
--> whole class, time sensitive, needs immediate attention information

Blog --> weekly updates, upcoming events and reminders

Please make sure you are receiving School Messenger emails, as this is a channel of communication for system, school and classroom information. When newly registered, these messages can sometimes go to your Junk folder.

Did you know you can subscribe to our classroom blogs? Never miss an update!

This week, students continued to build routines and expectations within the Montessori Work Period, through introduction of additional materials for Science, Language and Sensory Table.

Exploring artifacts of nature.

Sequencing life cycle models.

Categorizing according to criteria.

Solving and transferring puzzle pieces outside of the frame.

Working with the Metal Insets develops motor control and
prepares the child for writing letters by practicing straight and curved lines.

Montessori materials are often self-correcting.
Matching capital letters with lowercase can be practiced and confirmed
by completing the puzzle picture.

Matching letters to print.

Letter construction.

Snack

To promote independence, it is helpful if daily snack is easily opened and cleaned up by your child. Some considerations:

  • - utensils as needed

  • - child safe scissors for tricky packages

  • - containers with tabs for easy opening

  • - a placemat or cloth napkin to keep their space clean

Alberta Health Daily Checklist

Thank you for your continued support for the health and safety of our learning community. As part of our entry plan, please remember to review the Alberta Health checklist for children under 18 at the start of each day. There is no need to submit a daily checklist to the school or teacher.

Alberta Health Daily Checklist

Families should call 811 if you have questions about the checklist so health professionals can provide the most accurate advice.

Celebrating Birthdays

In keeping with Montessori tradition, we honour birthdays as a child’s journey to the present day. The Montessori Birthday Walk Around the Sun is a lovely way to celebrate a child's birthday in a school setting.

In preparation for the Birthday Walk Around the Sun, parents of the birthday child are asked to send one digital picture for each year of the child's life. We will look at and discuss each photo on that child's special day with the rest of their class. We will celebrate our July and August birthdays in June.

In an effort to celebrate each child on their birthday, please ensure digital photos are sent 24 hours ahead of time.

If your child has already had a birthday this month, please feel free to send in photos so that we can celebrate together, even if a little late.

The Montessori Birthday Walk around the Sun is more than just a birthday celebration; it's a lesson in science, astronomy, and grace, and a community building experience for the entire class.

As we are still respecting health protocols, we ask that no items come from home (edible or non-edible treats). Thank you for your understanding.
